I started this website on Thursday 23rd March 2000.

UPDATED 04/05/2011 I have added a few more details onto the Roddis/ Howarth surnames page amongst others and added a new page for the Ballance family.

Family History:

  • I am interested in many but principally the following surnames: (please click on one to find out more)

    SKIDMORE / BANKS / ROBINSON / COATES / LAYTE / JONES / GUEST / RODDIS / JOWITT / GOUTHIT / OGDEN/ BALLANCE

HOWEVER, my main interest so far has been on the Crosthwaite/Crosswaite family of Whitkirk near Leeds:

  • There is a brief history of the Crosthwaite/Crosswaite family history from 1702 to 1890.

  • There is also a detailed breakdown of my Crosswaite/Crosthwaite ancestors.

  • Transcriptions of Crosswaite/Crosthwaite census entries from 1841 to 1891 . This material was transcribed from microfilm(1841-81)/microfiche(1891) openly available for public inspection at Leeds/Barnsley Local Studies Sections.

  • There are the christenings of Crosthwaites and other relations at Whitkirk parish church from 1848-1898 at: Whitkirk Christenings: 1848-1898.

  • The christenings/ Marriages of my Crosthwaite/Crosswaite family from 1702 onwards can be found at the Familysearch website run by the Church of latter day saints. In particular, christenings are at either Whitkirk (most), Leeds St. Peter's non-conformist (3 or 4), Wortley by Leeds (one), Ledsham (one) or Birstall (one). Marriages are at Whitkirk (99%), Aberford (one in 1804) or Rothwell (one in 1812).

  • There are also 3 wills of relatives mentioned on the aforementioned site dating from 1847,1852 and 1855 at: Wills

  • A list of Crosthwaites/Crosswaite and Variant spellings who are buried at Various Leeds Cemeteries is at: Leeds Cemetery records .

  • There are also pictures of remaining Crosthwaite/Crosswaite family gravestones in Whitkirk (x2) and Hoyland Nether(x1).

  • There are also census references for 1841/1851/1861 to Mary Robinson (nee Crosthwaite, born cir. 1816) with her husband and family: Mary Robinson (nee Crosthwaite) and Family .

-Mary moved to Ohio, USA in 1869. She is the daughter of Joseph and Deborah Crosthwaite. Joseph, born cir. 1775, can be seen on the above page linked to by the Family tag.

  • One of the people we have been in contact with through the internet also has information on his part of the Crosswaite family tree and his family surnames of Williams and Blackah: Graeme Williams's Family History Website .

    Other Sites of Interest:

If you are interested in or have relatives from the Whitkirk area of Leeds you should try a visit to this excellent site devoted to Whitkirk: www.whitkirk.com

Undoubtedly the best place to look for ancestors is the Mormon church's site: www.familysearch.org which contains well over 700 million individual christening and marriage records. These are mainly extracted from original records although it is recommended that you verify the information yourself with the original source.

Increasingly important is Rootsweb Free BMD website which has over 15 million entries from the Birth, Marriages and Death index from 1837 onwards. It is especially useful in providing possibilities for spouses in marriages (before the spouse's surname is given from 1911 onwards).

If your willing to pay it might also be worth looking ancestry.co.uk.

For PCC (Canterbury) wills to 1858 national archives documents online is excellent.

For PCY (York) wills 1731-1858 the index is now searchable online on British Origins an incredibly useful source for family historians in the north of England- its just a shame that you cannot download the actual wills as per PCC wills though you can send off from the Borthwick institute.

  • Far and away the best Cricket website is Cricinfo.
